What is system software

System software is software that directly operates the computer hardware, to provide basic functionality needed by users and other software, and to provide a platform for running application software.  Operating systems are essential collections of software that manage resources and provide common services for other software that runs "on top" of them. An example of this would be a printer driver or the computer's BIOS (basic input/output system), which gets the computer system started after you turn it on and manages the data flow between the operating system and attached devices such as the hard disk, video adapter, keyboard, mouse, and printer.

System Software provides application software a platform to run and an interface between the end-user and hardware. Usual system software consists of several configuration files, including system services, libraries of functions, system preferences, drivers for peripheral devices, system services, etc., and various programs, like compilers, assembler, file management tools, debuggers, system utilities, etc.

One of the most common system software is Operating System (OS). An operating system is a primary requirement that a computer system requires to operate. Examples of System Software

Basic Input/Output System (BIOS)

Once you power ON the computer system, the computer microprocessor uses BIOS to regulate and manage the data flow between an OS and the devices attached to the system. These devices may include a hard disk, keyboard, mouse, adapter, printer, pen drive, etc.

Boot

The boot program is responsible for loading the OS into the computer system's main or random access memory (RAM).

Assembler

An assembler auto-translates the instructions written in assembly language into machine language to make them understandable by a computer system.

Device Driver

A device driver enables your computer system to communicate with the devices attached to your computer system. It converts the instructions of the operating system into the device-understandable language and vice-versa.
